Pond Plants

Last year we were fortunate to have two of our WATER HYACINTHS bloom. This is rare. It was lovely and appreciated. Not only was it beautiful to regard but WATER HYACINTHS are quick to spread and like the other floating water plants we have for sale are much needed pond water sun protection. I put pond plants into the pond and then step back to watch the commotion. It is as if the koi think they are playing volley ball with the plants that provide them with important sunshade. The texture of the plant canopy provides desired shade to the pond but also gives it the natural look. Ideally your koi oasis plant cover should take up about two thirds of your pond in order to provide the optimal sun protection necessary. These floating plants also make a wonderful natural water filter. A plant filter works with nature. It's easy to construct and requires little maintenance. It's attractive and low maintenance. The floating plants we stock are WATER LETTUCE, WATER HYACINTH, and BOTSWANA WONDER! Also being offered is HORNWORT which is a floating oxygenating plant and WATERSPRITE which can be planted at the pond bottom or left floating. These plants are quick to multiply and together they will provide the variety of texture that will be pleasing and easy on the eyes.

There are many other hardy shallow water plants available. These marginal plants add to the appeal of your pond oasis. PAPYRUS,
ZEPHYR LILY, 3 kinds of TARO, BOG BEAN, CORKSCREW RUSH, MARSH MARIGOLD and others. Come by to ponder the
beauty to be brought home to your pond to enjoy.
Aid the circle of life your pond requires with MELANTHO SNAILS which will be available as well so you can bring them home to your pond to start devouring unwanted algae. (Snails do NOT clear green water.) MELANTHO SNAILS will usually overwinter in the pond. Available when danger of frost is over.
A limited supply is available so for best selection it is best to come early in the pond season which opens here at B'n'Koi the weekend after Mother's Day when, I hope, there will be no longer be danger of frost damage to both plants or the koi.
